Ebay France on the theme of Counterfeits

Ebay is taking pains to protect its image. The French subsidiary of the American auction house is currently defending itself against the accusations brought by LVMH Moet Hennessey – Louis Vuitton of not proceeding competently enough against the auctioning of counterfeit items. After it was made known last week (as we reported) that the worldwide-largest luxury goods concern wants to sue the auction house for 37 million euros compensation, Ebay France have now issued a statement.

The company is still pointing to the numerous measures they employ to oppose brand piracy, amongst them the VeRO program, brought into existence in cooperation with trademark holders, that ought to make the locating of advertisements for forged goods easier. Moreover, around 2000 co-workers will be working in the field of ‘Confidence and Security’ alone, .it states in the statement. Ebay have further decided to start an enlightenment campaign to educate consumers on the theme of brand piracy. The auction house admittedly also mentions that it is unable to supervise the authenticity of products up for sale. There is always something of the order of 104 million articles worldwide up for offer on the ebay website at any one time.

The dispute with LVMH concerns the question of who is responsible for the counterfeits sold on ebay. The auction house considers itself merely as a mediator, while LVMH would like to make it subject to legal measures in cases of brand piracy. In the USA a similar legal dispute is in train, brought by the well-known jewelers Tiffanys. It likewise wants to make ebay responsible, because more and more complaints are cropping up connected with falsified jewelry pieces.
